Air Quality Policy and Protocol
Triple Crown has reviewed restrictions around outdoor events and cancellations of sporting events related to local Air Quality Index and Advisories. Health Canada uses the Air Quality Health Index to describe activities and exposure that are suitable related to the amount of smoke and particulates in the air.
We reserve the right to cancel the 2024 Triple Crown related to poor air quality and in consultation with the Air Quality Index, Standards for Air Quality Health Index and BC Air Quality Advisories. If the AQHI for Metro Vancouver NW is 7 or above on Friday, July 19 at 8:00am or forecast for the next day, we will cancel the ride and inform riders by email.
All riders will receive a reimbursement of their event fee if the event is unsafe to hold, it is unsafe to exercise and the event is cancelled.
Air Quality Health Index
We will be watching the AQHI for North Vancouver and West Vancouver. If the air quality is 7+ the morning of July 19, we will be cancelling the Triple Crown for Heart ride and informing riders by email.
The AQHI is measured on a scale of 1 (low) to 10+ (very high). The AQHI index values are grouped into four categories that help you to easily and quickly identify your level of health risk:
Low Health Risk: AQHI values from 1 to 3
Moderate Health Risk: AQHI values from 4 to 6
High Health Risk: AQHI values from 7 to 10
Very High Health Risk: above 10 (A very rare occurrence usually connected to wildfire smoke)
Planned events during the wildfire season will not necessarily be cancelled due to high AQHI readings. Organizers may decide to cancel events when the AQHI indicates 'high' to 'very high' health risks.
Organizers may provide alternatives to outdoor events, such as moving an event indoors, altering the duration, or postponing until the smoke has cleared. The AQHI can be used as a tool to make personal decisions for your activities and decide whether to attend outdoor events when the sky is smoky.
More information on cancelling or modifying outdoor events during the wildfire season can be found below.
We will be using the Cycling BC and BC Soccer Air Quality statement to provide structure around cancelation of the Triple Crown if Health is at risk related to the amount of particulate in the air:
Low Risk , 3 or Below:
Continue with training as usual.
Medium Risk 4 – 6: Be prepared to adjust the practice by:
Reducing the intensity.
Reducing the duration of the practice.
Providing resting periods.
High Risk, 7 or Above:
Prepare to reschedule.
